Preservation, Renovation
2007
The original 1,200 square foot plantation store was completed in 1929 and shortly after was expanded with two additions, rear of the building and a warehouse, adding approximately 4,300 square feet of space.
MASON renovated the existing Honolua Store, reconstructed the warehouse behind the store, and constructed a connection between the two buildings. Working with Jim Tucker of James Tucker Associates, Inc., who designed the retail components on the interior of the store, we preserved the historic elements while modernizing the retail space and function. Once completed, the store continued to function as a general store, while the warehouse was renovated into a café/coffee shop with a full commercial kitchen.
Shortly after the renovation, this store was renovated again for modern retail use by a subsidiary of the ABC Stores. Today it’s still being used as a general store, gourmet coffee shop, restaurant and deli.
