The Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art opened the Mughal Suite to the public for the first time in the property’s history in October 2014. This bedroom-and-bathroom suite is Shangri La’s cornerstone - a set of rooms that Doris Duke commissioned architect Frances Blomfield in Delhi to design while on her 1935 honeymoon with James Cromwell.Barbara Shideler, AIA was the Project Architect for the preparation of the Mughal Suite. The project required conservation treatment of over 200 objects, ranging from tiny enameled buttons to major architectural features. Over sixty of these objects required custom-made mounts. In addition, 25 miniature paintings were reproduced and framed, two new settees fabricated, eight draperies, blinds or other textiles fabricated or treated and a new carpet purchased.
