Honolulu Star-Bulletin Building

Mason Architects prepared a Hawaii Register of Historic Places nomination for the former Honolulu Star-Bulletin building located at 125 Merchant Street. This small, two-story building served as the newspaper’s offices from 1912 through the 1960s. Despite extensive alterations, MAI found that the building retained sufficient integrity to be eligible for its contributions to the history of Hawaii’s news industry. The building was added to the Hawaii Register on August 26, 2009.

Soon after, MAI developed a Maintenance Plan for the owner in support of the Historic Commercial Property Maintenance Agreement with the City and County of Honolulu. This agreement provided a partial exemption from real property taxes pursuant to ROH Sec. 8-10.30, the “Historic Commercial Real Property Dedicated for Preservation.”

In 2014, MAI designed new canopies/awnings and signage that was in keeping with the character of the original structure. Historically-appropriate light fixtures were installed in the lobby. The project also included modifications to improve the accessibility of the historic structure.
